The Marine Corps JROTC provides a Color Guard for football, basketball, and baseball games at South Stokes High School, and every football game at West Stokes High School. (Follow the school calendar for dates, times, and weather rescheduling) We also participate in several community events, North Carolina Adopt-a-Highway program, compete in drill and marksmanship competitions.
2023-2024 School Year Events:
19 Aug 2023- An annual Purple Heart Foundation ceremony in Lexington at Richard Childress Racing Facility. Cadets provide an escort for all attendees, Armed Forces Veterans, and Gold Stars Families (families of the fallen Veterans) at this Annual Purple Heart Banquet.
16 Sep 2023 - Fall Fest, Walnut Cove, from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. Cadets meet at the Cove Square and assist the organizers with anything needed in support of the event.
24 Sep 2023 - Multiple Sclerosis Bike Race from 6 a.m. (departing South Stokes on the activity bus) till 12 p.m. (back at school). Cadets set up the canopy, and directional traffic flow signs, and then support the cyclists with cheers, drinks, and snacks.
7 Oct 2023 - KINGFEST, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. at the Central Park in King. Cadets assist with directing traffic and managing access to the festivities.
26 Sep - 13 Nov 2023 - An annual Marine Corps JROTC National Postal Air Rifle competition. The match is open to all current and new marksmanship team members, and it is going to take place at South Stokes indoor range.
18 Oct 2023 - Marksmanship Air Rifle Competition at the McDowell High School, in Marion NC.
28 October 2023 - 5:30 p.m. - 10:15 p.m. The 248th Marine Corps birthday celebration. Cadets will celebrate in a fashionable style at the Marine Corps JROTC Ball with their dates, wear fancy uniforms, and enjoy this very special evening. Location: South Stokes High School's back gym. We also have the birthday cake ceremony first, then Cadets will receive dinner and soft drinks, and then our DJ will provide some awesome music until 10 p.m.
2 Dec 2023 - King Christmas Parade
7 Dec 2023 - Regional director, Major Hampton's visit to South Stokes. Major Hampton will spend the entire day evaluating the program, observing and participating in various events.
9 Dec 2023 - Walnut Cove Christmas Parade.
16 Dec 2023 - Sandy Ridge Oak Grove Baptist Church Veterans Wreath Laying Ceremony. Our cadets travel from South Stokes to Sandy Ridge, where they do a color guard and wreath laying ceremony for local fallen Veterans.
27 Jan 2024 - Marksmanship Air Rifle Competition at the West Forsyth High School, Winston-Salem.
21 Feb 2024 - Field of Honor Park field trip, Kernersville.
15 Mar 2024 - Marksmanship Air Rifle Competition at Fort Mill High School, Fort Mill, SC.
19 Apr 2024 - (Competition date 20 April) - Annual Drill Competition at the Mooresville High School, Mooresville NC. This was an overnight trip. Cadets depart South Stokes around 10:00 a.m. and return the mid-afternoon on the following day.
15 May 2024 - Danville Tank Museum field trip.
1 Jun 2024 - Marine Corps League Mud Run, Pinnacle NC. (Graduating Seniors can participate in this event too)
7 June 2024 - Graduation sword detail ceremony, at South Stokes.

17 Sep 2022 - Fall Fest, Walnut Cove, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. We met at the Cove Square and volunteered to assist the organizers with anything needed to establish the site of the event.
25 Sep 2022 - Multiple Sclerosis Bike Race from 6:30 am (departing South Stokes on the activity bus) till 12 p.m. (back at school). Cadets volunteered to set up the canopy, direction signs for the bikers, tables with snacks, Gatorade, water, etc., and then cheered on the bikers as they traveled through.
22 Oct 2022 - Walnut Cove - Veterans appreciation lunch at the Palmetto Theater. The JROTC Cadets provided a Color Guard, door escorts for all participants, and spend time with veterans.

3 March – The marksmanship team traveled to R-S Central High School in Rutherfordton, NC to compete in the Hilltopper Classic Rifle Match.
11 March - FEEDSTOKES (Volunteering Event) 5k & 1/2 Marathon, Central Park, King, NC. 15 March – Cadets traveled to Camp Hanes and participate in the Stokes County Career Fair.
17 March - Members of our marksmanship team traveled and competed in an air rifle competition at Fort Mill High School in Fort Mill, SC.
31 March (Competition date 1 April) - MSgt Grogan and CWO3 Jurkiewicz traveled with the drill team to Mooresville for drill completion. This was an overnight trip. Cadets departed South Stokes around 10:00 a.m. on 31 March and returned mid-afternoon on 1 April.
21 April - Members of our marksmanship team traveled and competed in Saint George's air rifle competition at McDowell High School, in Marion NC.
4 May - Our color guard provided services at the Camp Hanes, honoring Stokes County retirees.
9 May - The JROTC Cadets participated in the hiking trip at Pilot Mountain Park. The purpose of the field trip was to discover the outdoors, work on the Cadets' endurance, and conduct a battle study and group discussion on the physical and psychological challenges of navigating through challenging terrain.
16 May - The JROTC Cadets with the Walnut Cove VFW post 11173 conducted a memorial site clean-up. This memorial site, located in the wooded area off Hwy 8 was built in memory of the Air Force crew that crashed during a training flight on 7 September 1944.
12 – 13 June - The JROTC conducted Cadets' Leadership Camp. We traveled and toured Washington D.C. and Quantico VA, where we visited the National Museum of the Marine Corps.
26 - 27. We hosted (with the participation and assistance of some JROTC volunteers) the Stokes Summer Career Camp Participants at South Stokes. Those young students came to South Stokes and had a chance to run the obstacle course, play team sports, conduct field-day activities, and even fire air rifles (under direct adult supervision).

11 February - Cadets completed a field trip to the Kernersville Veterans Memorial Park.
18 February - Marksmanship team traveled and competed at the McDowell High School, Marion, NC CMP Rifle Cup Match.
29 March - Cadets supported the Stokes County EXPO at YMCA Camp Hanes.
2 April - MSgt Grogan and the Drill Team traveled to Mooresville, NC, and participated in the drill competition.
6 April - Cadets participated in and supported the Career Fair at North Stokes High School.
13 May - Cadets completed a field trip to the Armored Museum in Danville, VA.
